A Vision of Flame Review: Come for the Magic, Stay for the Chaos

Spoiler-free review of A Vision of Flame — a romantasy filled with fae politics, elemental magic, murder mystery, banter, strong characters, romance tension, and shocking twists. Perfect for readers who love fantasy romance, court intrigue, magical powers, and slow-burn relationships.

I have a personal rule when it comes to reviewing books on my blog: if I rate something under four stars, I usually just quietly vanish into the night and pretend I never read it. Not because the book is bad — sometimes a story simply isn’t for me — and I hate publicly handing out low ratings when another reader might absolutely love it.

But every now and then a book comes along that makes me want to scream at strangers on the internet about how good it is.

That book is A Vision of Flame.

I opened it with approximately zero clue what I was getting into, and within the first few chapters I was already obsessed with the unique magic system, the chaos, the characters, and the “just one more chapter” problem that absolutely destroyed my sleep schedule. Honestly? I wish Goodreads allowed me to give this one six stars.

A Vision of Flame (Elements & Illusions #1)A Vision of Flame by Aimee Lavigne
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I went into this book almost completely blind and WOW, what a ride.
The first thing that hooked me was the magic system. It feels fresh, unique, and layered in a way that immediately made me want to know more. The abilities, the politics, the mystery — it all pulled me in from chapter one.
But honestly? The characters are what made me stay.
Evelyn is fiery, impulsive, sneaky, and stubborn in the absolute best way. She has attitude, makes questionable choices, and somehow feels incredibly real because of it. The banter between the main trio of friends was one of my favourite parts of the book. Their chemistry felt natural and fun, which balanced the darker twists perfectly.
And just when I thought I had everything figured out, the author threw another spanner into the works.
Again.
And again.
The romance tension? Excellent. The secrets? Deliciously frustrating. The political danger and murders kept the pacing moving while the relationships gave the story heart.
This is one of those books where I kept saying “okay NOW I know what’s happening” only to be immediately proven wrong.
Five stars from me — and honestly, if Goodreads allowed six stars, I’d probably use it.

By the final pages of A Vision of Flame, I was fully invested in the characters, the mysteries, and the absolute chaos this story throws at you when you least expect it. If you love romantasy with unique magic systems, dangerous secrets, murder mystery elements, banter-filled friendships, political tension, and romance that keeps you guessing, this is absolutely worth adding to your TBR. I went into this book blind, and honestly? That may have made the experience even better. Five stars from me — and I will definitely be continuing the series.
